About

Edward Ota

I was born on October 20th, 1991, in El Salvador, a small country in Central America. It’s a tropical paradise with hardworking people, delicious food and landscapes filled with beaches, lakes and volcanoes. The locals call it El Pulgarcito de América, meaning “little thumb”.

I lived there for the first nine months of my life before moving to Tokyo, Japan. I spent the first five years of my life in Japan, where I was introduced to sushi, manga, anime and most importantly where my passion for video games and technology began. For as long as I can remember at a very young age, I knew I wanted to dedicate my life to developing video games.

After Japan, my family and I moved to Irvine, in Orange County, California. That’s where I learned how to be an American. To this day, I feel like California is where I’m from. When I was 12, my mom decided it was time for me to reconnect with my roots, learn Spanish and get to know my family, so we moved to El Salvador and experienced a different way of life. I was exposed to another culture and language that taught me to appreciate even the simplest things. My perspective on life grew and so did my heart.

I graduated college in 2017 from La Escuela de Comunicación Mónica Herrera, where I earned my bachelor’s degree in Strategic Design. During that time, I worked in the electronic components industry as a designer and afterwards in a marketing agency doing everything from creating brand identities to editing videos and running social media campaigns in HubSpot.

In 2020, during the pandemic, I graduated at the University of Colorado Boulder, specializing in digital marketing. I created Walkway, a Google Chrome Extension, to connect with people during isolation. I managed and collaborated with over 60 different artists to make it. That same year, I pursued a Master of Arts in Game Development at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco.

Since 2021, I’ve been developing my own video game, Abyss. Now, I split my time working between New Jersey, New York and El Salvador.

Now, as we near the end of December 2024, I’m incredibly close to releasing the demo of my video game. I can’t wait to see what life and God have in store for me. I feel so grateful to have come this far and to have had the opportunity to create experiences and share them with others.

That’s me playing Street Fighter 2 on the Famicom, the Japanese version of the SNES (Super Nintendo Entertainment System). 🎮

This is my dog, Wolfie, when he was a 3-month-old puppy. This little guy taught me the true meaning of love and loyalty. Losing him inspired me to create a game that reflects the pain of that loss. 🐶❤

What is Walk?

Walk is a startup I founded during college, with a logo featuring two fingers walking forward to symbolize progress. With this brand, I aim to “do what has never been done before” by creating unique experiences. Walk is the first Salvadoran startup to develop a Google Chrome extension and produce an independent video game.

Abyss, Indie Game Development

During my spare time, I’ve been developing Abyss for three and a half years. I’ve had the privilege of collaborating as the director and lead game designer with an incredible team I assembled including a programmer, 2D illustrator, 3D modeler, UI designers, riggers, animators, composers, lawyers, other artists, friends and family, all of whom have helped bring this vision to life.

While the main headquarters are in San Salvador, El Salvador, Walk collaborates with talented individuals from around the world including the United States, Canada, Guatemala, Buenos Aires, London, Berlin, Thailand, Pakistan and Bangladesh. Walk is dedicated to creating world-class entertainment that unites people through groundbreaking video games and technology-driven experiences.
