Will Smith slaps Chris Rock at the Oscars after he said a joke regarding Smith’s wife’s baldness. It’s been one of those moments that’s shaken the internet and I’m here to discuss just a little bit about it before moving on with life.
Will Smith Slaps Chris Rock
Will Smith, without a shred of doubt, overreacted by slapping Chris Rock in front of billions of people around the world during the Oscars on Sunday night. I, like many people, grew up watching Will Smith become a famous actor during the 90s and early 2000s. Will Smith appeared in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Men in Black, I AM LEGEND, Seven Pounds, and my personal favorite, A Pursuit of Happiness. Over the past few years, Will has begun to vlog about his life on his YouTube channel, spreading wisdom whenever he can.
What the world saw on Sunday was something far-fetched from what he demonstrates on social media. Chris Rock made a joke about Will Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, relating to her baldness. As a result, Will Smith began to laugh and then quickly stood up and walked toward Chris Rock before giving him a hard slap across the cheek. The medical term for baldness is called Alopecia and it seems like everyone is overreacting to Jada’s condition. Everyone knows you don’t die from going bald, it’s a result of growing old. Far worst things have been done and said on numerous shows. Chris Rock’s joke is not one of them.

It wasn’t right of Will Smith to slap Chris Rock it’s never ok to resolve your problems by resulting in physical violence, especially on national television. Will Smith could’ve just taken the joke, sit through the entire show, and talk to Chris Rock about how he didn’t like the joke off-camera. After the slap, Will walks off stage and sits down in his front-row chair to loudly yell, “Keep my wife’s name out your fucking mouth”, twice.
The violence and vulgarity look horrible to watch because it’s a disappointing moment for everyone watching. It’s not what people want to see from someone they’ve come to admire growing up. The whole situation should’ve been handled differently but instead, Will Smith stole the attention of the Oscars that night and then won the best actor award for King Richard. Smith’s entire speech was hypocritical because he talked about protecting the ones he loves and being a vessel of love after he just smacked Chris Rock.
This situation could’ve escalated to something much worse. At any moment, Chris Rock had the opportunity to press charges and sue Will Smith. Watching the entire scene made me reflect on how everyone needs to control their behavior when things get heated. They both could’ve had a brawl in front of national television and that would’ve been another spectacle to witness.
Will and Jada’s Open Relationship
Both Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith have confirmed to have an open relationship and she’s been having affairs while Will hasn’t. It was a shocking event for all of his fans to witness as it was documented when the news first began to spread across the internet. Jada is a terrible person, in my opinion, manipulating and emotionally damaging Will, and yet he’s still with her when he could be with anyone else.
There’s also a rumor that Jada and Chris had something going on while the two worked together on voice acting for Madagascar. Regardless of what’s happening with their personal lives, I feel kinda bad for Will having to tolerate all of the mistreatment from Jada but assaulting Chris doesn’t make his situation any brighter.
The entire world is divided once again between the two sides. Some applaud Will Smith for defending his wife while others see his actions as inexcusable and unprofessional. Will Smith went over the line and now he’s a joke on the internet after disrespecting Chris Rock like that. There are hundreds of memes now about Will Smiths’ slap at the Oscars 2022. Jim Carrey shared his thoughts about how he was sickened by the scenario. The producer of the Oscars was interviewed by ABC news and had a few things to say as well.
The Oscar Aftermath
I’ll be honest, I didn’t watch the Oscars, and I didn’t know what movies were nominated. All I know is that Will Smith slaps Chris Rock. It has distracted the world from the war on Ukraine even if just for a few days. This night at the Oscars in 2022 is just as big as the time Kanye West interrupted Taylor Swift during the 2009 VMAs.
Later, Will Smith apologized to Chris Rock through an Instagram post. Everyone’s going to move on but we’ll always remember when Will Smith slaps Chris Rock. It’s just another episode in life!
