It’s you against the world!

Fortnite is one of the most recent gaming phenomenons that have happened in the past years. I first saw it while browsing Instagram four years ago and I noticed lots of people shooting, building, and doing weird dances in the game. I downloaded the game for free on the PS4 and within the first round I understood why it was popular and I was having fun.

In a Nutshell

Fortnite’s Battle Royale is a new genre of video game in which 100 players compete to be the last one standing. Battle Royale is derived from the Japanese Manga of the same name, about a dystopian future holding yearly contests of 9th graders to have deathmatch on a remote island. It is a brutal story with intense violence, gore, and rape. Hunger Games is a popular western adaptation with little to no similarities other than the concept of the last man standing.

In Fortnite, players drop from a bus in the sky onto any location on the island to find weapons and resources as fast as they can. Once you encounter another player you need to eliminate them and in doing so, they will drop all of their resources, allowing you to pick them up and continue on your way. Weapons and items are grouped into Tiers and color-coded to indicate their rarity. Survive by any means possible until you’re the last person alive and you’ll get a Victory Royale! Ok, so now that you understand what Fortnite is, let me explain why Fortnite is popular. As the game began its ascent into popularity a YouTuber named Richard Tyler Blevins, otherwise known as Ninja, was getting recognized around the world for how well he played and fast building skills. He ended up playing games with Hip-Hop artist Drake, and since then things took off.

The Gaming Phenomenon

Fortnite has dominated the Battle Royale genre and surpassed games like Player Unknowns: Battle Grounds, Apex Legends, and Call of Duty Warzone. They continuously improve upon the gameplay by adding new mechanics, weapons, and updating the map.

The amount of franchises that Fortnite has made an alliance with is remarkable. Its marketing strategy invites cross-overs from various universes such as Star Wars, God of War, Halo, The Walking Dead, Dune, the Predator, Street Fighter, Tomb Raider, Jurassic Park, Stranger Things, Resident Evil, Rick & Morty, Ghostbusters, El Chapulin Colorado, John Wick, and more than a three dozen Marvel and DC characters.

The star of Fortnites current update: Chapter 3 Season 1 is Currently, Tom Holland as Spiderman and as Nathan Drake from Uncharted. Fortnite has also brought ex-wrestler and now movie actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as a playable character.

You have virtual concerts with artists like Marshmellow, Travis Scott, J Balvin, Ariana Grande, which are more like 10-minute animations with songs from the artists. Special guest appearances by Ryan Renolds. For the Met Gala Balenciaga appeared in a Times Square spot. LeBron James for Space Jam. They hold tournaments to win money and a 13-year-old boy named Bugha won 3 million dollars

What else is there?

Apart from playing by yourself, you can invite one, two, or three friends to join you and defeat other teams together. There’s a creative mode where you can create your own islands and games to share with the community and if it’s popular enough it will land on the front page. You can even make money from your creations through the Support-a-Creator program. Fortnite offers players access to view previously recorded matches with an incredibly in-depth editor, something that no other game offers.

Both old and newer generations of players get to relive and experience their favorite franchises together in Fortnite. You can be Robert Downy Jr. as Iron Man with Baby Yoda on your back and then talk to Ariana Grande dressed as an astronaut who will sell you an automatic assault rifle at the beach and then do the Macarena. Do you see what I’m saying?

Fortnite is free to download on a cellphone, iPad, laptop, or computer. It’s no wonder that Fortnite is so popular with the kids. Children have the accessibility to play a triple-A video game whenever they want in the palm of their hands.

Listen to me, I promise you, mark my words: Your children, niece, nephew or grandchild will ask you for VBucks for their birthday or Christmas. VBucks is Real World Currency converted into Virtual Money that is spent on in-game purchases called Skins. A Skin describes a character’s cosmetics. These purchases do not alter gameplay or increase a character’s abilities.

And of course, you can dance.

So here’s the thing, whether you like it or not, Fortnite is here to stay. It’s solidified itself in the industry as one of the hardest-hitting juggernauts to come in a long time. It’s going to be difficult to compete with the Fortnite brand and community as with every season new mechanics are implemented, balance tweaks are added, and more crossovers are sure to come as future franchises continue to be released.

Currently, Tom Holland as Spiderman and as Nathan Drake from Uncharted is the star of Fortnites latest update: Chapter 3 Season 1. I wonder what on earth will Fortnite come up with next? I’m excited about the future, it looks bright.
